Mata Traders is a brand I’ve been familiar with for a couple of years due to my love of window shopping at online boutiques. But I didn’t realize until last week, when Elizabeth of Delightfully Tacky featured one of their dresses, that I could browse and buy directly from the company.
Mata Traders is the epitome of what it means to be fair trade. They provide fair wages and keep traditional craftsmanship alive while working specifically to empower women in a society that largely still views them as second rate humans.
Spending time with these groups has helped us realize that even the most traditional women, when given the opportunity, thrive in a sphere of meaningful work that is outside their homes and families. We have also learned that equality in the workplace IS possible in a country as socially stratified as India. Whether a beginner sewer or the marketing director, all the women that make our clothing and accessories have a voice. We are so proud to be a part of that voice by bringing you their quality handiwork in a high fashion, fairly traded product line.
In addition to having a detailed, thoughtful, and effective mission, their clothes and accessories are wearable and on-trend.
The price point is a bit high for my budget, but that’s to be expected for handmade, fair trade garments. I think they’re worth contemplating.
