I loathe the commercialism of the Christmas season, so it’s rather counterproductive to feature a list of what I want. But it’s happening anyway. The above items are things I’d really like to have, but I don’t really plan on getting them (except for the books).
You know that Amy Grant song, Grownup Christmas List? I appreciate the sentiment, but it rubs me the wrong way. I think that it’s just another form of slacktivism to tell people you want world peace without doing anything to achieve it. Advent should ultimately be contemplative, quiet, and hopeful. It’s not really a time for lists at all. It’s a time to put away the notepad and meditate on the wonder of the life-giving new life of Christ that comes in the midst of winter darkness to bring us light, to let us roam in the sunshine.
